Google Business Profile Q&A: The Underrated Feature That Wins Customers

Google Business Profile Q&A: The Underrated Feature That Wins Customers

Most business owners spend time setting up their Google Business Profile — filling in the address, uploading photos, asking for reviews. That's the right instinct. But there's a feature almost everyone ignores that's sitting right on their profile, visible to every potential customer who finds them on Google Maps or Search.

The Q&A section.

Anyone — including people who've never visited your business — can ask a public question on your Google Business Profile. Anyone can also answer it. If you're not actively managing this section, you're leaving it open to random answers from strangers, which may or may not be accurate.

That's a problem. And it's also an opportunity.

What the Q&A Section Is

The Questions & Answers feature appears directly on your Google Business Profile, visible on Google Maps and in the Knowledge Panel that appears when someone searches your business name. Customers and searchers can post questions, and you — or anyone else — can answer them.

These questions and answers appear publicly on your profile and can influence whether someone decides to contact you, visit, or move on to a competitor. They also feed into how Google understands your business, which means they have a subtle but real effect on your local SEO.

Why You Need to Own This Feature

Anyone can answer, not just you. When a question goes unanswered by the business, Google will sometimes auto-suggest answers based on reviews. Other users can also chime in — often helpfully, sometimes incorrectly. An incorrect answer about your hours, pricing, or services can send customers away or set false expectations.

Questions affect conversions. The Q&A section surfaces at a critical decision-making moment — when someone is actively looking at your business and deciding whether to act. A well-answered question can be the difference between a call and a bounce.

It influences what Google knows about you. Questions and answers that include relevant keywords help Google associate those terms with your profile. It's a subtle signal, but it contributes to how your profile ranks for related searches.

How to Manage Your Q&A Properly

Step 1: Turn on Notifications

In your Google Business Profile dashboard, make sure notifications for new questions are enabled. You want to know immediately when someone asks something so you can answer quickly — not discover it three weeks later after the wrong answer has been sitting there.

Step 2: Answer Every Question

When a question comes in, answer it promptly and completely. Use this as a customer service moment — be helpful, clear, and professional. Don't just answer the narrow question; give context that makes the answer genuinely useful.

If the question is about something already covered in your profile (like hours), answer it anyway and direct them to where they can always find the latest information: "Our current hours are Monday–Friday 9–18. You can always find the most up-to-date hours directly on our profile."

Step 3: Seed Your Own Q&A

This is the move most businesses miss. You don't have to wait for customers to ask questions — you can post them yourself (or have a team member do it from a personal Google account) and then answer them from your business account.

Think about the questions your customers ask you most often: pricing, parking, what makes you different from competitors, whether you serve a specific area, what the process looks like. Put those questions in your Q&A section with thorough, genuine answers.

This creates a mini-FAQ right on your Google profile that addresses objections before they become reasons not to call. Combined with optimizing the rest of your GBP listing, it makes your profile significantly more conversion-friendly.

Step 4: Report Inaccurate Answers

If a misleading or incorrect answer has been posted by someone else, you can flag it for removal. Click the three dots next to the answer and select "Report." Google reviews flagged content and removes answers that violate their guidelines. Don't leave incorrect information sitting there — act on it.

What Makes a Good Q&A Answer?

A strong answer does several things at once:

  • Answers the specific question directly — don't bury the answer in caveats
  • Adds useful context — if the answer has nuance, include it
  • Naturally incorporates relevant keywords — mention your location, services, or niche where it fits naturally
  • Closes with a next step — "Feel free to call us at [number] to discuss your specific situation" or "You can book directly through our website at [URL]"

Keep answers genuine and helpful. Don't keyword-stuff or write promotional copy — Google and readers will both see through it.

How Q&A Works With Your Broader Google Business Profile Strategy

The Q&A section is one piece of a larger picture. Your Google Business Profile is effectively your most important local SEO asset — more so than your website for many local searches. Every element of the profile contributes: photos and posts, reviews and how you respond to them, your business description, your categories, and yes — your Q&A.

Businesses that treat their GBP as a living asset — actively managed, regularly updated, and consistently engaged with — outperform those who set it up once and forget about it. The Q&A section is five minutes of work per question, and it pays dividends every time a potential customer reads an answer that turns their uncertainty into confidence.
